Chapters 1 and 3

Chapter 2

Chapter 4

The marketplace filled the northern half of the plaza ...

Chapter 5

On his second day exploring the richer part of the city ...

On the third day, exploring far into the southeastern corner of the city ...

On his fourth day in Cobble Town ...

Chapter 7

As he resumed his wandering along the streets of Cobble Town ...

Chapter 9

Chapter 10

As he wandered, he searched for any symbol a healer might use.

Chapter 12

After leaving the slave market ...

Chapter 14

Ilika began his last day of preparations by moving into the inn's largest sleeping room.

Chapter 15

"Now to make a number, we need more than digits, we need place values ..."

"Here's an example ..."

"Now it's your turn ..."

"I did a lot of the work for you on that last question by making it neat and organized. The real world isn't always like that."

"If I rotate the drawing at the top of the sheet, which of the other four drawings can it become?"

"If I look in a mirror at the drawing on top, which of the other four drawings can I see?"

"Which of the four drawings at the bottom of the sheet can be found somewhere inside the drawing at the top?"

"Which of these four drawing is completely contained inside itself at a different size?"

"The rest of you get to copy this drawing."

"You have only these lines and shapes to work with, and you need to make something artistic, something expressive ..."

"This is a hand, and this is a glove. They have a relationship ..."

"These first two drawings are related to each other, as this one is related to ..."

"Even though you have not yet learned to read and write, we're going to play with some words by translating from one language to another ..."

"... then there was silence ..."

Chapter 19

They all nodded as they licked their bowls and fingers, then followed Ilika upstairs to the inn's largest sleeping room.

Chapter 22

There was a long silence. "Eleven, I think."

Chapter 24

When finished with vowels, they had six letters making nine sounds ...

His students gathered around and were kept busy for the next hour ...

This time Sata was the first to break into giggles, but she soon had company.

Chapter 25

All ten students became very quiet.

"The place on the far right is always the ones place ..."

"Let's try it."

"Now let's review all the places ..."

Chapter 28

Every sound deserved a letter, she asserted.

Toli nearly pulled out his hair with frustration, and proposed they never, ever use those letters.

Chapter 31

"Why do we need sun hats?" Buna asked ...

They began their journey into streets once forbidden to all of them ...

Chapter 35

Most of the students had never seen one and gathered around, their eyes wide with fascination.

The symbols for hills, mountains, forests, rivers and springs, and towns and roads, all like little pictures, were easy to remember.

Nine pairs of eyes counted the marks, just to be sure.

"See this little village in the forest? It's small and unimportant."

"Here's what the logic looks like. R is for rain, and W for wet."

"If we have the same relationship between rain and wet, and it's not wet, then we know it didn't rain ..."

Chapter 41

A quarter hour later, in the growing dawn light ...
