Standing on Your Own Two Feet
On the Future Timeline, based on recent events and studies, DROUGHTS AND FLOODS and BIO-DIVERSITY COLLAPSE were moved from the future to this year, and ceased to be tentative. AGRICULTURE COLLAPSE was moved from the future to this year, but left tentative at this point. Thanks to recent efforts by some world leaders, NUCLEAR WAR and POPULATION PEAK, both currently tentative, were moved into the future. This year's Earth Overshoot Day (1 August) was added.
The World Wide Fund for Nature's Living Planet Index has been added to the Future Timeline. It is a measure of the state of global biological diversity based on population trends of vertebrate species from around the world, relative to the year 1970.
On the Future Timeline, the latest Doomsday Clock statement from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has been added to the current year, 30 seconds closer to "midnight" than last year.
On the Future Timeline, PLANETARY BOUNDARIES IDENTIFIED was added to 2009, the first year of the concept's publication, and FOUR PLANETARY BOUNDARIES ALREADY CROSSED was added to 2000, as they were probably crossed sometime in the late 20th century.
The Future Timeline was adjusted, moving a few things that didn't happen yet, but still look imminent, to 2018.
For reasons beyond the control of both J. Z. Colby and the host Matt Schulz, the Colby Ghost Hunt on the Queen Mary on 8 December has been cancelled.
World Scientists' Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice was just published, with a description, excerpt, and link to the PDF on the Youth Futures blog.
All of the art and other stuff about the Queen Mary have been moved to the new Queen Mary page, and the author has begun drafting the information for the ghost hunt he will be doing there later this year.
Although it really began slowly more than a decade ago, PERMAFROST THAW AND BOREAL BURN appears to have increased greatly this year, so the question mark was removed on the Future Timeline page. Also, ARCTIC SUMMERS ICE-FREE was moved to the 2018-2020 block as it looks like the arctic will tie or set a new record low this year, but not melt completely.
J.Z. Colby gives an honest but frightening analysis of the current situation in the Arctic, and how quickly it could bring our civilization to an end, in the Youth Futures blog.
An excellent analogy by Chris Martenson for our current climate-change siutation has been posted to the Youth Futures blog.
On the Future Timeline page, the Earth Overshoot Day has been added to all past years, as calculated by the Global Footprint Network. Also, due to on-going geopolitical friction, NUCLEAR WAR and POPULATION PEAK were moved into the current year, but left questionable at this point.
A flowchart of the general disruption and collapse process taking place on Earth has been added to the Future Timeline page. It is partly based on the insights of author Dmitry Orlov.
The author explores the possibility that the current pro-war rhetoric has a deep psychological funtion related to Climate Change on the Youth Futures blog.
On the Future Timeline page, a time-temperature graph has been added to help explain the current global climate situation.
The author explains the terminology of referring to events as different shades of swans on the Youth Futures blog.
14, 18, 22 February
The author made several minor changes on the Future Timeline page.
On the Future Timeline page, the "Doomsday Clock" of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was added to each year on the timeline for which the Clock was updated, with a summary of the concerns that caused the update, as written by the Bulletin.
With a change in leadership in the USA, and several such changes probable in Europe during the coming year, the threat of nuclear war has greatly lessened so, on the Future Timeline page, the NUCLEAR WAR item was moved from 2017 to the 2018-2020 block. The same changes of leadership mean the BROWN YEARS BEGIN item in 2017 ceases to be questionable.
A slightly-updated Media Kit is now available. Also, as of this date we are no longer using Facebook because it runs so poorly on a slow rural internet connection.
Part of a good essay by Kurt Cobb, on climate change in the justice system, was posted on the Youth Futures blog. Also, on the Future Timeline page, BROWN YEARS BEGIN was added to 2017 and (on 29 December) CORAL COLLAPSE was moved to 2016, but left questionable.
The long-promised new section on the Preparation page, "Step 8: Take civilization with you," has finally been completed!
On the Future Timeline page, most of the questionable items that were feared might come to pass in 2016 were moved to 2017. The POLITICAL POPULISM, RECORD TEMPERATURES, and ARCTIC/ANTARCTIC UNSTABLE items were added to 2016, and the question mark was removed from the ULTIMATE TIPPING POINT item (and "soil carbon loss" added to its description). Also, because of the current and deep-seated trend of political leaders blaming other countries for all their problems, the questionable NUCLEAR WAR item was moved up to 2017.
Cecelia Harper, an honorary Nebador citizen, passed away after battling cancer for about 15 years. She was a reader, critiquer, and proofreader of the entire NEBADOR series, and was deeply involved in the production of the dramatic audiobooks of NEBADOR Books One, Two, and Three. She described herself as "a Christian, a mother, a dancer, an actress, and a spunky coworker." She will be missed, and perhaps now knows more about Nebador than the rest of us.
In the Youth Futures blog, J. Z. Colby reflects on the ideas of being witnesses, and persevering during hard times for the purpose of training, prompted by several questions about the farewell letter at the end of NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia.
After news that 58% of the Earth has now experienced at least a 10% bio-diversity loss, the BIO-DIVERSITY COLLAPSE item was added to the 2021-2025 group in the Future Timeline.
All editions of NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia are now available!
NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia is now available in hardcover, with Medium Print paperback, Large Print paperback, and Global paperback editions coming very soon. It includes the new novella Escape from Sonmatia Two by J. Z. Colby, ten previously-published short stories by past winners of the NEBADOR Writing Contests (2010-2014), the narrative about King Zolko's people on Sonmatia Four, and three new short stories by the winners of the Last NEBADOR Writing Contest (2014-2016).
Based on a thoughtful analysis by Prof. Sujoy Ghose, the following changes were made to the Future Timeline:
ULTIMATE TIPPING POINT was tentatively added to the current year based on temperature, Arctic sea ice, and Carbon dioxide data.
RAIN FOREST COLLAPSE was moved from the 2021-2025 block to the 2017-2020 block (and reworded) based on evidence that they are close to, or at the point of, being net carbon sources.
MARTIAL LAW AND FASCISM was moved from the 2021-2025 block to the 2017-2020 block as a logical consequence of other events projected for that timeframe.
Tarrant Co. Youth Advocate Program, Arlington, Texas, won a set of 6 large print NEBADOR books, and a large print Standing on Your Own Two Feet.
After considering recent news from Canada, the item PERMAFROST THAW AND BOREAL BURN was moved to the current year on the Future Timeline.
Reminder to all aspiring young-adult writers: the Last NEBADOR Writing Contest is entering the home stretch, with final drafts due 30 June 2016. The winner(s) receive Great Silver Pieces and publication in NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia. I already have a first draft from both a girl and a boy.
The first draft of the novella Escape from Sonmatia Two, which will appear in NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia, was completed today, and the author has commissioned Sidney Oster to do the cover art.
12 and 18 December
The items on the Future Timeline were finalized for 2015.
Preparation Step 7 is about building your first "house."
22 and 27 September
Based on recent events in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, a MASS MIGRATIONS topic was added to the current year on the Future Timeline page. Also, an ARCITC item summarizes the sea-ice situation and gives the most recent, and very worrisome, Methane levels.
Preparation page, Steps 4, 5, and 6, are all about food. Enjoy!
Also, a well-written family bonding experience has been placed on the Reviews/Articles page. It's a good example of what several families have told me.
The introduction, Step 1, and Step 2 have been posted on the new Preparation page for those of you who have been asking for some hard, cold climate-change preparation advice. Step 3 is coming soon!

After the recent death of Rachael Hedges, the NEBADOR cover artist, the author has determined that she signed and numbered very few unsold Fine Art Prints before her passing, so they will no longer be available.

Her web site, Art on Line by Rachael, which shows many of her drawings and paintings, is preserved for the enjoyment and enlightenment of others.
J. Z. Colby, at her request, has taken on the task of assembling her wisdom and inspiration, both words and pictures, into book form to be shared with the world.

Pope Francis releases his encyclical Laudato Si ("Praise Be to You" or "Blessed Be"), one of the most important leadership events of recent centuries. Although it is a synthesis of existing knowledge, it will at least serve the purpose of helping to reveal who, in leadership positions, is willing to sacrifice the Earth and all life on it for short-term comfort and profit. The pope's most memorable statement, in the author's opinion, is: "If we destroy creation, creation will destroy us."
Cellini Fine Gifts in downtown Portland, Oregon, that used to carry autographed NEBADOR books and MP3 CD audiobooks, is going out of business. They ceased to do well at the same time as the entire economy, about 2008. The author can send an autographed book plate to anyone who would have ordered an autographed book from them. Also, the NEBADOR audiobooks, in addition to downloads from Audible.com and Apple iTunes, can still be received in MP3 CD format directly from the author.

The author just returned from a visit to the Queen Mary where a ghostly influence first touched him 3 years ago and began some of the most important inspirations for Book Eight. On this visit, he was able to visit that same spirit in her home, and also get familiar with a another part of the ship that just might be the location of a story that has not yet been written. This trip also allowed him to add 2 new items to his Queen Mary collection, 1 book and 1 video.

The Future of Young-Adulthood -- Childhood's End?
An extended childhood was one of the perks of a century of wealth from cheap energy and the technology to use it. That era may well be winding down. If so, today's young adults -- roughly, those between the ages of 10 and 20 -- will be facing a tough transition just as their parents are struggling in other areas. The NEBADOR series of young-adult science fiction novels was inspired by Muses who obviously believes that young people need to begin sharpening their wits and honing their skills now, before the future forces them to do so.
The Youth Futures blog looks at the growing concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, how it fits into history, and how it might affect young people.
