2014-16 The Last NEBADOR Writing Contest Winners

First Place: Still Voices

Prize: 3 great silver pieces and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia)

Mary Anne Brenner, 12, Australia: "Even though it took me more than a year to do it, writing this story has been one of the most wonderful times of my life."

Second Place: Floating Away

Prize: 2 great silver pieces and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia)

Tiffany Pertranovich, 15, New York: "It was great fun to write a story that told everyone about my burning desire to be FREE and making my own decisions and my own money. Thanks to my parents for understanding my need, and thanks to Mr. Colby for dragging me through the process of making my story shine even when I only did it kicking and screaming. And thank you for the great silver pieces!"

Third Place: The Lonely Space Dragon

Prize: 1 great silver piece and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Ten: Stories from Sonmatia)

Sammy McNeil, 14, Cornwall, England: "This is good. It's just a playful little story that I made up with some friends while running around on the downs, and I didn't think I'd win, and the girls who got first and second place have much better stories, but I'm still happy about it, and I'm glad the space dragon got home. Bye!"

2013-14 NEBADOR Writing Contest Winner

First Place: The Magic Needle

Prize: two great silver pieces and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Eight: Witness)

Kathleen Tully, 15, Iowa, is a highly gifted youth who is not afraid to try new things. She claims that her academic success is because she never cares one bit what other people think about her. Her only regret is the lack of a boyfriend at this point in her life.

"Wow. Thank you."

2012-13 NEBADOR Writing Contest Winner

First Place: Buna's Search

Prize: two great silver pieces and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Seven: The Local Universe)

Shadow Buffalo-walker, 18, Wyoming, is completely comfortable on a moon-lit night with coyotes yapping, wolves howling, and buffalo stomping, but has little use for cities and other man-made things. She learned more at the feet of an old native-American woman than in school, but admits that schools are probably necessary for those who want to fit into the human world. For her, it's too late -- she has seen the other side, and will spend her life with at least one foot there. The publication of Buna's Search was her best 18th birthday gift.

"[very impressive wolf howl]"

2011-12 NEBADOR Writing Contest Winners

First Place: Neti's Temptation

Prize: two great silver pieces and print publication (in NEBADOR Book Six: Star Station)

Karen Buchanan, 15, Quebec: "I love writing in either French or English, and I like the style of these books, but I have my own ideas too."

"Merveilleux!"

Second Place tie: What're Friends For?

Prize: an autographed NEBADOR hardcover edition

Katelynn Persons, 17, Oregon: "Acting isn't a hobby, it's a way of life." The words I live by. I eat, sleep, and breathe performing and literature. At any time of day you can find me writing, acting, dancing, reading, or in other words just about any literature or performing art you could imagine. I love people, and I love meeting new people and being around different types of people. I don't hate anybody. I love diversity. Performing has been in my life since a young age, and I never plan on letting it leave; it's my number one passion. But on the off chance that I'm not doing any of the above, you'd probably find me making plans with friends, on the computer, or trying to give advice to friends in need. I absolutely love country and rock music, along with a little of everything else in between. AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Darius Rucker, and Rascal Flatts are some of my favorites, just to name a few. Reba McEntire is my hero! Not only for her incredible music ability but also for her extraordinary acting, and unbelievable heart of gold. My parents are my mentors, my heroes, and the ones I'll never stop loving. My little brother is a brat, but has a golden heart, and nobody is aloud to mess with him except for me. I love people, school, art, along with unlimited and artistic self-expression.

"Thank you!"

Second Place tie: Sata's Strength

Prize: an autographed NEBADOR hardcover edition

Chenice Louise Clarke, 18, UK: "Chenice is now embarking on the next chapter of her life after taking a gap year where she lived in New York, worked in a school for international students and spent some time in Venice. She will be doing a degree in English and American Literature and History in one of the most historic towns in England. Chenice enjoys reading, writing, going to the theatre and spending time with friends and family. Chenice's favorite novel is; "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom closely followed by "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. Chenice thanks you for taking the time to read her short story and is happy for you to contact her via email or her Twitter page @CheniceLouise."

"I am incredibly happy to discover I tied for second place!"

Second Place tie: Boro and Sata

Prize: an autographed NEBADOR hardcover edition

Terri Snyder, 14, Nevada: This feels really real and you don't make promises you can't keep. I hate myspace and things like that cause they promise lots of friends and it doesn't happen unless you'r pretty or funny. I'm serious and I want to know all about things. I love science and math. No one likes people like that. I'm not a vamp-lover and not going to be one. I've read 1 and 2. Please put me in the citizens. I like Tera because we have almost the same name and there are donkeys near my house.

"Sososo cool!"
